چکیده

We consider a finite-horizon, periodic-review inventory model with demand forecasting updates following the martingale model of forecast evolution (MMFE). The optimal policy is a state-dependent base-stock policy, which, however, is computationally intractable to obtain. We develop tractable bounds on the optimal base-stock levels and use them to devise a general class of heuristic solutions. Through this analysis, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the myopic policy to be optimal. Finally, to assess the effectiveness of the heuristic policies, we develop upper bounds on their value loss relative to optimal cost. These solution bounds and cost error bounds also work for general dynamic inventory models with nonstationary and autocorrelated demands. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the results.

Inventory Control with Unobservable Lost Sales and Bayesian Updates

We study a finite-horizon lost-sales inventory model. The demand distribution is unknown and is dynamically updated based on the previous sales data in a Bayesian fashion. We derive a samplepath representation of the first order optimality condition, which characterizes the key tradeoff of the problem. The expression allows us to see why the computation of the optimal policy is difficult and wh...

Inventory Models Comparison in Variable Demand Environments

This paper presents a comparative cost performance study of four inventory models. One of them, referred as Requirement Planning, operates using demand forecast to quantify the acquisition decisions. The other three inventory models are the Order Up to Maximum Inventory Level, Base Stock and Fixed Lot Size. The Requirement Planning and Base Stock models operate with minimal purchase order quant...

Replenishment Planning for Stochastic Inventory Systems with Shortage Cost

One of the most important policies adopted in inventory control is the (R,S) policy (also known as the “replenishment cycle” policy). Under the non-stationary demand assumption the (R,S) policy takes the form (Rn,Sn) where Rn denotes the length of the n th replenishment cycle, and Sn the corresponding order-up-to-level. Such a policy provides an effective means of damping planning instability a...

Utilizing Forecast Band Refinement for Capacitated Production Planning

W e present a model for forecast evolution that captures two notions related to forecasts: (1) forecasts are not exact; (2) forecasts over longer horizons are less certain than those over shorter horizons. We model the forecast of discrete demand as a band defined by the lower and upper bounds on demand, such that future forecasts lie within the current band. We develop a capacitated production...
